Over the centuries, a myriad of civilizations have wrestled for control over the seafaring channels of the Mediterranean. Those civilizations have come and gone but the strategic importance of the Mediterranean remains. SDAFA's Mediterranean project examines the importance of the region as a maritime trading network, energy hub, source of conflict, and crossroad of cultures.

Greece and Turkey have always regarded each other with mutual suspicion but tensions have not run this high since the Imia/Kardak crisis in 1995, which nearly led to war.
